OPEN THAT BITCH UP!!
No hood too ghetto, no camera too expensive, no bones to weak. Im jumpin in that mf.
More often than not at shows or events there's a few other photographers. Some just in the way with their first camera trying to get the settings right but some that do know what they're doing. One of the first times I got a "serious" gig (it literally just had good lighting in a venue for quinces) I was covering some rappers performing in convoy. There were of course other people getting content but their setups were ass, just like mine. I started with a Sony NEX-3 with a kit lens. Anyways, there was this guy that had a sony a7 something, recording video. Its important to mention for the context of this story that he was white, and that the demographic of the audience was black. I grew up with a similar demographic so I'm more aware of how to get the crowd going and how orchestrate some organic moments for the camera. I knew I couldn't compete with his gear but I could with my shots. So I jumped in the pit, everybody got active, the shots came out great and I had a lot of fuckin fun in that pit. That night is where I found my love for putting myself in situations others would think twice about.
Often times I hear others concerns about my gear, myself, my career (some venues don't allow you to take photos of the crowd). How I look at it is this. Most often than not at shows the people getting content only focus on the person with the mic, on stage. Everysingle show I cover, the crowd is what sets the tone for how well the shows goes. Some of the best shows Ive been to I left bruised, my gear scuffed up. BUT FUCK IT. If not me then who else.
I LOVE WHAT I DO. IM A SALMON
